Regional Assessment in the Ring of Fire Area

The Regional Assessment will be conducted in the area centred on the Ring of Fire mineral deposits in northern Ontario, approximately 540 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay and 1,000 kilometres north of Toronto. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada will work with the Province of Ontario, Indigenous groups, federal authorities, non-government organizations and the public to determine the appropriate activities, outcomes and boundaries of the regional assessment.


Latest update

June 24, 2023 — The participant funding application period has closed. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada is reviewing the applications to determine funding allocations.

 

May 11, 2023 — The Minister of Environment and Climate Change met with Indigenous leadership from Matawa and Mushkegowuk Territories in January 2023. The Minister committed to working together to co-develop and co-lead a focused regional assessment under a Terms of Reference that is prepared in partnership to reflect the priorities of Indigenous communities and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.
