The WFP Innovation Accelerator was launched in 2015 to source new innovations, sprint pilot projects, and scale high-impact solutions by connecting them with WFP’s global network of more than 21,000 staff and field operations in over 120 countries and territories.

From our base in Munich, Germany, the Accelerator has supported over 120 projects, with 22 innovations scaling-up globally to achieve significant impact. In 2022 alone, the Accelerator implemented 31 sprint projects, with 17 scaling-up globally, while innovation projects supported by the Accelerator reached 37 million people across 88 countries

As well as nurturing and scaling start-ups and nonprofits working to achieve Zero Hunger, we co-create solutions addressing multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global problems, such as healthcare, vaccine delivery, and gender equality, with partners including the Austrian Development Agency, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Creating Hope in Conflict: A Humanitarian Grand Challenge, GIZ and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), among others. In 2022, we delivered 9 accelerator programmes for 58 ventures targeting multiple SDGs. This area of work was established due to external interest from impact-focused UN and private sector actors who are keen to leverage the Accelerator’s vast experience leading innovation programmes.

Innovations supported by the Accelerator have raised more than US $200 million in co-funding (including funding raised through private and public investors, in addition to the support received from the Innovation Accelerator.)
