Project Overview

The first, fundamental step in conserving vital wetland ecosystems is the ability to recognize wetlands when working on the landscape. This skillset is essential to meeting regulatory requirements, respecting traditional uses and habitat values of these ecosystems, and making informed decisions about implementing avoidance, minimization, and reclamation/restoration practices. A plain-language, highly visual guidebook that can be easily used by the general public, indigenous, and practitioners who are working in the field is an important tool for identifying wetlands. Ducks Unlimited Canada’s National Boreal Program is leading development of an accessible Yukon Wetland Field Guide. The goals of this project are:

  1. Conduct outreach to stakeholders and knowledge holders who are well-versed in Yukon wetland identification, classification, traditional uses and ecological goods and services (academia, consulting, government, industry and Indigenous communities).
  2. Develop the Yukon Wetland Field Guide through a collaborative process with expert advisors. A large portion of content development for this resource will involve compiling traditional knowledge, data and a photographic library of Yukon wetlands and wetland plant species.
  3. Communicate and conduct knowledge exchange activities with government, industry and other practitioners whose work would benefit from understanding and classifying Yukon wetlands, thereby raising awareness and understanding of wetlands and wetland policy requirements.
